Several schools are taking heed to the cold weather…by starting classes on a two-hour delay…as well as some being closed, including most Lorain County districts.
Fremont man dies in crash into icy pond
A 43 year-old Fremont man died Sunday evening after his utility vehicle he was a passenger in went through a thin layer of ice in a frozen pond.
According to the Sandusky Register, Matthew McCabe was pronounced dead after efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Authorities say McCabe and another man were driving through some unknown territory when the incident occurred on Finefrock Road in Ballville Township.
The driver received medical assistance for hypothermia.
State News/Wayne County fatal plane crash
Federal authorities are investigating what triggered the crash of a small plane in Wayne County.
The plane went down yesterday, shortly after takeoff, from a private airfield.
Both people on board…the pilot and the passenger…were killed.
Ottawa County/Crash involving garbage truck
Two people were hurt when a tractor trailer hit a stopped garbage truck on Route 2 in Ottawa County’s Carroll Township Monday afternoon.
According to the State Highway Patrol, 28 year-old Justine Teeters of Norwalk sustained non-life threatening injuries when a semi struck and knocked the garbage truck into him while he was collecting trash.
The tractor trailer driver, a 57 year-old Michigan man, was seriously hurt and taken by Life-Flight to a Toledo hospital after his vehicle left the road and struck a guardrail.
Lorain County/Elyria Foundry fire
No injuries from a brief fire Monday, at the Elyria Foundry…
Company officials say, the fire resulted from a furnace in the ‘melt shop’.
Erie County/Farm Bureau campaign
Erie County Farm Bureau will kick-off its 2019 membership campaign next Monday.
Taking place at Redhead Ciderhouse at Burnham Orchards in Berlin Heights, the event is an invitation for active members to learn the benefits of Farm Bureau membership and to help sign up new members.
Those interested in attending must RSVP to the county office by Wednesday.
State News/Famous hippo turning two
The Cincinnati Zoo’s famed prematurely born hippo will soon turn two years-old.
“Fiona” was born at a dangerously low weight, but outside help from the Smithsonian National Zoo and the Cincinnati Children’s hospital enabled Fiona to not only survive, but become a social media sensation.
A behind-the-scenes birthday party is planned on Thursday…that will be shared on social media.
