Fire in Monroeville Thursday destroys two apartments, leaves five homeless

A fire early Thursday morning in Monroeville has left five people homeless. The Norwalk Reflector reports that the blaze began about 3:30 am in the Surrey Court apartments when a woman dropped a cigarette on to her oxygen tank, which then ignited. Two apartments were destroyed by the fire and a third received smoke damage. No injuries were reported; but a cat did perish in the fire. The American Red Cross was on scene to help victims with food, shelter, and clothing.

 

Davis-Besse nuclear plant could close in 2017

The Davis-Besse nuclear power plant near Oak Harbor is at risk of closing within the next year. According to various media outlets, plant owners Akron-based First Energy Corporation, is planning to sell or possibly close the power station in 2017 or 2018, unless state officials change energy regulations to make it practical to keep it and other plants open. The plant has over 600 employees, who make an estimated $86,000 per year. In 2015, Davis-Besse produced $10.2 million in property and utility tax income with a good portion going to county agencies and schools.

 

Port Clinton Walleye Drop

The city of Port Clinton will again host their “Walleye Drop” event on New Year’s Eve. Along with the 20 foot long, 600 pound walleye being dropped at midnight, there are plenty of other fun activities going on during New Year’s Eve including Touch-a-Truck and an African Safari Wildlife Park animal show; as well as food, games, and live music. New waterslides coming to Kalahari

It may be cold and a little snowy outside, but Kalahari waterpark in Sandusky is making us all look forward to warmer weather. The waterpark resort has announced five new waterslides coming in the summer of 2017. They are called Extreme Rush, Sahara Sidewinder, Serengeti Spinner, Stingray, and Tornado Alley.
