Former Ohio Astronaut John Glenn dies

Former astronaut and U.S. Senator John Glenn has died. He was 95.  Glenn became a national hero in 1962 when he became the first American to orbit the Earth. Hank Wilson with the John Glenn School of Public Affairs says Glenn died Thursday afternoon at the James Cancer Hospital in Columbus. Glenn was the third U.S. astronaut in space and the first of them to get into orbit. He spent 24 years as a Democratic Senator from Ohio, and at age 77, returned to space aboard the shuttle Discovery.

 

Mickey Mart donates $10,000 to local breast cancer fund

Mickey Mart Foodstores presented a $10,000 check Thursday to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Erie County. The money was raised through merchandise sales and the Making Strides walk in October. The funds will go towards breast cancer research as well as programs that support local survivors. The presentation took place at the new Mickey Mart on US 250 in Sandusky.

 

Bellevue Police hosting holiday events

The Bellevue Police Auxiliary is hosting a couple of holiday events during the next few days. A ‘Stuff a Cruiser’ food drive takes place Sunday to benefit the Fish and Loaves Pantry, at Bassett’s Market from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.  On Monday, a Santa Claus event for children and adults with special needs will be held at Jingle Junction at the Bellevue Community Center from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.

 

 

Vermilion man continues winning streak on Jeopardy

Vermilion’s Tim Aten will be back on Jeopardy tonight. Aten came out on top again last night, with a 5-day winning-total of nearly 80-thousand-dollars.

 

Holiday decorating safety tips

For those still decorating their homes for the holidays, here are a few safety and money saving tips from The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio:

-Check your Christmas lights for damaged cords.

-Stay clear of power lines when hanging lights.

-Do not place a tree near a fireplace, heat vents, or portable heaters.

To save money on your energy bill:

-Put outdoor lights on a timer to save electric.

-Use energy efficient LED bulbs.

-When travelling, set your thermostat to 55 degrees to save energy and prevent water pipes from freezing.
