More COVID cases…more COVID patients in the hospital…

The Ohio Department of Health reported more than 20-thousand new cases yesterday…and more than 700 new hospitalizations…that’s a one-day record since the pandemic began nearly 2 years ago.

In Huron County, 1 new death and 71 new cases were reported yesterday, according to Norwalk Ohio News.com.

The Erie County Health Department’s latest weekly COVID update has been released.

There were 5 deaths and 1,200 cases during the reporting period of December 26th to January 1st.

56 percent of Erie County residents are now fully vaccinated.

The numbers are in from the Ohio Hospital Association, and they show…when it comes to the percentage of those vaccinated in Lorain County by Zip Code

…The cities of Avon Lake and Avon lead the way.

However, those communities are tied for the second highest number of new COVID cases per 1-thousand residents, over the past 7 days…trailing only the city of Lorain.

Lorain Schools CEO Jeff Graham says, students are still scheduled to return to classes on Monday.

He says, however, everyone has been told to prepare for remote learning, just in case there’s a COVID surge.

Fresh off New Year’s resolutions, this is the time of year when gyms and fitness centers see an increase in foot traffic.

University Hospitals Fitness Center in Avon is encouraging members to wear masks while NOT performing high energy exercises, wipe down exercise equipment and use on-site hand sanitizers.

The 18-year-old woman, accused of shooting and killing an off-duty Cleveland police officer during a carjacking on Cleveland’s west side, has ties to Lorain County.

Tamara McLoyd is on probation from Lorain County Juvenile Court.

When McLoyd was 17, she and two men were accused of robbing a Kipton man during an online dating scam.

It’ll be here in full force before you know it…winter weather.

The State Highway Patrol reminds drivers to follow safe driving tips and winterize their vehicles in preparation for inclement conditions.

The Patrol says that ever-changing weather patterns in the winter can catch drivers off guard; and you can reduce the risks of being involved in a crash by ensuring your vehicle is ready for the season, adopting winter driving techniques and following general roadway safety.

Ticket and concession sales at this Friday’s South Central boys’ basketball game versus Monroeville will be donated to a good cause.

The money will go to a memorial fund in remembrance of South Central sophomore Owen Feichtner, who passed away in a traffic accident last September.

Feichtner was an avid showman at the Huron County Fairgrounds, with the money from the memorial fund to go to help build new swine barn facilities at the fairgrounds.

A state grant will help fund extra Sherriff’s Office patrol on the roads this month in Sandusky County. 

Authorities will be focusing on winter driving awareness and the ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ campaign.
