Governor Mike DeWine signed a Corona Virus pandemic relief bill on Wednesday.

House Bill 170 provides over 787 million dollars in COVID-19 relief assistance to Ohio schools, 173 million dollars to the Ohio Department of Health for COVID-19 testing and vaccine distribution efforts, and 7 million dollars to further support the Ohio National Guard’s response to the pandemic.

In Huron County COVID-19 numbers…

2 new cases were reported on Wednesday, with the death toll remaining at 121.

Summer is looking good on the COVID front for Oberlin College…

After dropping their mask mandate in May, 84 percent of the campus has now been vaccinated for the virus with that number expected to grow.

Only 12 cases were confirmed during the spring semester, with no new cases since mid April.

A caseworker with Lorain County Children Services faces charges of sexually assaulting a child while on duty.

27-year-old Kenneth Rummel of Brook Park will be prosecuted in Lorain County Common Pleas Court and has been placed on unpaid administrative leave.

The candidates list is narrowing for the Norwalk City Schools open Superintendent job.  

According to Norwalk Ohio News.com, the Norwalk school board has trimmed the list from 18 to 8, which includes 2 current principals at Norwalk; Brad Cooley from the high school and Gary Swartz from the middle school.

The school board plans to interview the 8 remaining candidates next week.

In other Norwalk City Schools news, the Norwalk Reflector reports that a 1-year contract extension has been agreed to by the Norwalk Board of Education and the Teacher’s Association. 

The extension begins in July.

We already know of one new levy that will be on the November ballot in Lorain County.

A 300 thousand dollar, 5 year levy for the Lorain County Crime Lab and Lorain County Coroner’s office will be there after a vote by the County Commissioners on Wednesday.

This would help cover costs in moving the crime lab out of the basement of the administration building on middle avenue and into its own facility in Elyria.

Increased wages for Perkins School District unionized employees…

According to the Sandusky Register, the bump in pay for teachers is 2 ½ percent in base wages annually for the next 3 years, and a 2.75 percent annual wage increase for non-teachers that includes bus drivers and other staff members.

The new contracts go into effect in July.

The City of Norwalk wants residents to know that Columbia Gas is set to do GPS surveying work this month.

The city says that the work will not interrupt natural gas service and will not require workers to enter homes or businesses.

The Lorain Historical Society will be sponsoring history-themed boat tours on the Black River this summer.

They will take place in June, July, and August on select Fridays and Sundays.

Tours will be from 2 to 4 pm with a cost of $20 for each person.

-The Cleveland Indians game against the White Sox on Wednesday was rained out.  It will be made up on September 23rd as part of a split doubleheader.  The Indians have a scheduled day off today.
