The numbers are in from the Ohio Department of Health, and they show a decrease in unintentional drug overdose deaths in 2018 compared to the previous year.

Decreases were also seen in Lorain, Medina, Erie and Huron Counties.

Overall, 3,764 Ohioans died in 2018 of unintentional drug overdoses.

That’s down from nearly 5-thousand in 2017.

 

A Perkins Township factory was fined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in connection with an incident where a man was hurt.

According to the Sandusky Register, ThorWorks received a fine of close to $17,000 in which they received 3 safety violations.

The incident in question took place last July when an employee fell into a mixer and became trapped; where he eventually was rescued and treated at a Toledo hospital.

 

A 14-year-old boy from Lorain faces charges…

…he’s accused of bringing a loaded handgun into General Johnnie Wilson Middle School last week.

The boy told officials…he found the gun, on the way to school.

 

Huron County will continue to house inmates from Lakewood.

The Norwalk Reflector reports that the Huron County Jail has renewed their 6-month contract to hold Lakewood inmates who have been sentenced for longer than 12 days, as Lakewood is just a 12-day facility.

There are up to 20 beds to accommodate Lakewood inmates.

The contract has been in place since 2009.

 

The Ohio Department of Transportation has announced an upcoming road construction project in Huron County.

State Route 162, between Miller Road and Section Line Road, will close on Monday, March 2nd for a bridge replacement project.

Detours will be posted.

The project is expected to be complete May 1st.

 

Big-time upgrades are planned for Norwalk’s Whitney Field complex. 

Joe Widman of the Whitney Field Improvement Committee says they’re closing in on the $1.2 million budget for the project; but still need some help from the community.

The committee is looking to raise $200,000 to reach their goal…with groundbreaking scheduled for May.

Improvements include a new synthetic field turf for football, a new running track and a new digital scoreboard. 

 

The recreation program ranked best in the state by the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association will host its second annual dinner next month in Sandusky.

The Midtown Supper Club will be offering a 3-course meal on March 4th at HALO Live prepared by Sandusky’s chef’s-in-training.

Tickets are $25 each.

 

Later today, the Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio will launch its annual Harvest for Hunger campaign with a happy hour kickoff at its headquarters on Baumhart Road in Lorain.

This year’s honorary chairperson is Dr. Rebecca Starck, President of Cleveland Clinic’s Avon Hospital.

Second Harvest distributes food supplies to groups and agencies that serve Lorain, Erie, Huron and Crawford Counties.
