Lorain County Public Health is reminding us, to make our safety, a priority, in this extreme heat.

They recommend not leaving children or pets in cars, even if the window is cracked.

Reduce time and activities outdoors if possible.

And…if you don’t have air conditioning at home, consider spending time somewhere that does, such as a library, movie theater, or senior-center.

 

With temps expected in the high 90’s tomorrow, Monroeville Municipal Light and Power is asking customers to voluntary reduce electric usage during the hours of 2:00 to 5:00 pm on Friday.

They say by lowering usage during the hottest and coldest days of the year, residents can help keep electric rates lower in the future.

 

The eastbound ramp to Route 2 from Route 61 in Erie County is back open after being closed earlier this morning…

Emergency officials were on the scene there due to a fuel spill.

 

Traffic is flowing on Route 2 through Lorain County…

That was NOT the case for about 9 hours yesterday, due to a major crash in the eastbound lanes between Routes 58 and Middle Ridge Road.

The Highway Patrol is investigating what appeared to be, a head-on crash involving two semi-tractor-trailers in the eastbound lanes.

At least one of the truck drivers was taken by helicopter, to a hospital.

 

An abandoned house fire in Norwalk around noon Wednesday is being looked at by officials as suspicious…

Norwalk firefighters say they recognized a suspicious nature to the blaze on Grand Avenue right from the start…with the State Fire Marshal brought in due to suspected arson.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Norwalk Police.

 

A man from Elyria was charged with counterfeiting after being pulled over in Huron Monday morning. 

Police say they found 22 fake one-hundred dollar bills in 38-year-old Jowan McNeal’s wallet during a probable cause search after pulling over his vehicle for non-functioning tail lights on Route 2 near Berlin Road.

When asked why he had the bills, police say McNeal told them he possessed the money only for play with his child.

 

A two-year spending plan for the state is now on the desk of Governor DeWine, awaiting his signature.

State lawmakers approved a compromise package yesterday, after operating 17 days under an interim budget.

Provisions include;

-Additional money for water-quality programs

-Additional money for school buses

-Eliminating state income tax on people earning less than 21,750 dollars

 

An open house event for the new Sandusky City Hall and Columbus Avenue Lofts is set for this afternoon…

The Erie County Health Department and Firelands Regional Medical Center are hosting a former major league baseball player’s story of drug and alcohol addiction; and his path to healing…

“Darryl Strawberry: A Story of Addiction, Redemption and Affirmation” will take place Sunday, September 8th at 6:00 pm at The Chapel in Sandusky on Galloway Road. 

Strawberry, an 8-time All-Star, played 17 years in the majors during the 1980’s and 90’s. 

 

Sports Force Parks in Sandusky is hosting their 2nd annual Charity Car Show later today…

The event will benefit the Erie County Board of Developmental Disabilities ‘Week of Service’ and their toiletry drive.

Show time is 5:00 to 8:00 pm…and is free and open to the public. 

There’s a 5-dollar fee for those wishing to enter a car in the show.

 

The Sandusky Register and Norwalk Reflector newspapers say they’ve been sold to a West Virginia-based family company, Ogden Newspapers.

According to an article in today’s Sandusky Register, the two papers are currently owned by Sandusky Newspapers, Inc…a family-owned operation that’s been in charge of the Register since 1869 and the Reflector since 1913.

The deal is expected to be official later this month…with the new company to take control August 1st

Ogden has been in the business since 1890…currently publishing 47 daily papers and some weekly editions; in 16 states.
