Ohio’s first execution of 2014 took place this morning at the state’s death house in Lucasville.
53-year-old Dennis McGuire was given a lethal injection and was pronounced dead at 10:53am. He was sentenced to death for raping and killing a pregnant western Ohio woman in 1989. The U.S. Supreme Court denied his final appeal last night. McGuire was put to death by a never-before-used two-drug method. Five more executions are scheduled for this year.
Bogart Road, between Patten Tracht Road and Hayes Avenue in Perkins Township is closed while a transformer is moved to a site on Patten Tracht.
Norwalk’s Ridge Road, between Fair Road and South Norwalk Road will close Tuesday for three weeks for ditch work.
JC Penney has announced plans to close 33 stores, and cut 2,000 jobs.
Just one Ohio Penney’s store will close. It’s in Wooster.
The Plymouth-Shiloh Board of Education is accepting applications to fill a vacant seat on the board.
Applicants must be registered to vote, live in the school district and be at least 18. The deadline to apply is January 24th.
Huron school officials are doing away with the district’s CBI program.
The board of education approved the cost-saving measure this week. Officials said the program had just eight students.
A rather odd story, out of Vermilion.
Monday, police were called to Pat O’Brien Chevrolet, after an employee was bitten by a customer’s pet monkey. The worker sought treatment for a minor wound. The owner was told to have the monkey quarantined for 72 hours.
Charges of driving under the influence and failure to control have been filed against a Norwalk man involved in a wrong-way crash.
Michael Roberts was arrested Tuesday evening. The Highway Patrol said Roberts was driving east in the westbound lanes of U.S. Route 20 in Norwalk Township when he hit a guardrail and several trees. He wasn’t injured. Troopers said his blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit.
Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted has set early voting dates and hours for the May 6th primary election.
Early voting will be offered throughout Ohio between 8am and 5pm weekdays starting April 1st. In addition, all 88 elections board offices will be open between 8am and noon May 3rd, three days before the election.
Willard school voters may head to the polls in May.
The Board of Education is working on a plan to place a five-year, 1.2 mill emergency renewal on the spring ballot. It would involve no new money.
It goes to show, every vote really does count.
According to Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted, in the November, 2013 election, 47 races and issues across the state won or lost by just one vote. That includes 14 ties that were broken.
