Erie County/Sandusky police officer suspended

A 19-year veteran of the Sandusky Police Department has received a 30-day suspension after being arrested last month on felonies involving driving while intoxicated.

Erie County sheriff’s deputies pulled over Ken Gautschi on Fox Road near Kalahari Resorts on September 23rd.

Gautschi pled not guilty to all charges during his recent arraignment.

Ottawa County/Put-in-Bay mayor’s children face charges

The children of Put-in-Bay mayor Bernard McCann face charges related to a several-months long state investigation involving alleged wrongdoings by the island’s government officials, including the mayor.

Former councilman Michael McCann and former village council president Melinda McCann-Myers have been charged with multiple counts of conflict of interest.

Erie County/FRMC awarded $750,000 grant to fight drug epidemic

Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky has been given a $750,000 federal grant to help combat the opioid drug epidemic.

Initial plans for the grant, which is $250,000 per year for three years, is to use it for continued screening of ER patients that have signs of drug or alcohol abuse; or mental health issues.

Huron County/New Norwalk fire station set to open in a few weeks

The new fire station in Norwalk is coming along nicely said Fire Chief John Soisson to city council this week.

Power has been turned on at the new facility on Whittlesey Avenue with concrete being poured in the front parking lot and blacktop to be applied this week.

Chief Soisson said he expects to move in by the end of this month.

Erie County/Sandusky recycling bins to stay put for the time being

Sandusky city officials have come to terms with Republic Services to keep both of their recycling bins in place for at least the next six months.

Republic Services will receive $5,000 a month from the city over the next six months, negotiating down from $8,000 a month.

The bins are located on Cement Avenue by Lions Park and First Street near Cedar Point.

Republic Services had threatened to shut down each location because of increasing costs.

Huron County/Monroeville Sesquicentennial rescheduled

Monroeville’s 150^th birthday celebration has been rescheduled for next Sunday, October 14^th.

The two-day sesquicentennial event was planned for the first weekend in September, but was postponed due to rainy weather.

The celebration will now be a one-day-event featuring almost all of the original activities including a parade at 12 noon, a community picnic and photo and several kids’ events; except for Touch-a-Truck.

Erie County/Authors needed for Sandusky book fair

Calling all local authors…

The Sandusky Library is planning a book fair next April, featuring local authors.

Authors are invited to speak on panels and sell signed copies of their books.

A similar event was held in 2014.
