Columbus-Westerville/One of slain officers married to Monroeville grad

Police around the state are mourning the loss of two of their own.

54 year-old Anthony Morelli and 39 year-old Eric Joering, officers in Westerville, a Columbus suburb, were shot and killed Saturday after responding to a 911 hang-up call dealing with domestic violence.

Morelli had Huron County ties; as he was the husband of the former Linda Wilch, a 1982 Monroeville grad.

Quentin Lamar Smith has been charged in the deaths.

Seventeen officers in Ohio have lost their lives since 2014.

 

Fitchville/House fire

A passer-by on his way to work helped get a teenage boy and a dog outside of a home that was on fire Friday morning near Fitchville.

Brandon Oney of Greenwich saw the blaze at the home on Route 162 and pounded on the front door.

When no one answered, Oney checked the door, which happened to be unlocked, where he then found the boy and the dog.

Fire officials say the fire was started by an outside heat lamp inside a dog house.

 

Clyde/Fire victim likely dead of self-inflicted gunshot

The man whose body was found after a fire at a mobile home in Clyde late last month reportedly died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The victim was identified as a 36-year-old white male by The Lucas County Coroner.

The cause of the January 30th blaze at the home on West McPherson Highway is still under investigation.

 

Norwalk/Roadwork projects

A number of roadwork projects are wrapping up; with more soon on the way in Norwalk.

Work is being done now on the Safe Routes to School project; where flashing lights, signs and stripes are being placed near all elementary schools.  It’s planned to be finished by March.

Work recently came to a close on the $1.5 million Milan Avenue improvement project; as new traffic signals were placed at the intersections of League and Main.

Bids have also been awarded by the city for 2018 projects involving curbs, sewer lining and surface resurfacing.

 

Norwalk/New president at Fisher-Titus

Fisher-Titus Medical Center in Norwalk has a new president.

Doctor Brent Burkey of Westlake has been named the successor to Lorna Strayer, who announced her decision to retire last fall.

Burkey, a Pennsylvania native, is the current chief medical officer at Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital, where he’s worked since 2004.

 

Erie County Sheriff/New K-9 officer

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office will soon have two K-9 officers.

“Zeus”, a 2-year-old German Shepherd recently came to the states from the Czech Republic, where he now has a couple-hundred hours of training to complete before he’s ready for the line of duty.

Zeus is expected to join fellow police dog “Max” on the force in March.

 

Norwalk/Firelands Symphony concert at Ernsthausen

A family-friend concert featuring the Firelands Symphony Orchestra has been planned for February 25th at Norwalk High School’s Ernsthausen Performing Arts Center.

The orchestra will be joined by the Neos Dance Theatre for the 4:00 pm show where children are encouraged to wear their most ferocious animal costume.

General admission tickets are $5.
