Sheppard case/Florida suspect fights extradition

A man from Florida who’s considered a suspect in the 2003 alleged murder of Perkins’ Township’s Michael Sheppard continues to fight his extradition to Ohio.

35 year-old Joshua Stamm has filed a habeas corpus motion saying that the state of Ohio doesn’t have sufficient evidence to prosecute him and can’t prove Sheppard is dead due to his body never being found.

Scott Hall of Clyde and Adam White of Sandusky have been arrested for the alleged murder; with their trial scheduled for February 6th.

Stamm is currently serving a three-year prison sentence in Florida on weapons charges.

Huron County/Fugitive caught

Flu/Huron County

Cases of the flu are on the increase this season in Huron County.

The county reported 37 positive flu tests during the second week of January, up from 35 cases the week before.  During 2017, only 26 cases were reported during the same time frame.

Six of those 37 had to be hospitalized for the flu; resulting in a total of 29 people in Huron County being hospitalized for the flu this season.

Perkins Police/Narcan use down

Perkins police say the use of the drug overdose antidote, Narcan, decreased in 2017.

Authorities reportedly used 35 doses on subjects in 2017, compared to 52 in 2016.

Police believe that while it’s possible that the opioid epidemic could be lessening, their reduced use of Narcan could also be due to the antidote being more available over-the-counter.

Erie County/Bridges to be fixed

Erie County engineers are looking to fix three more bridges in 2018.

This comes after two bridges, one on Joppa Road and the other on Strecker Road, were repaired last year.

In 2018, officials plan to replace the bridge on Mason Road in Florence Township and repair bridges on Livengood Road in Oxford Township and Scheid Road in Huron Township.

Monroeville man/Drug charges

A Monroeville man was arrested last week on drug possession charges.

36 year-old Issac Mathis was pulled over by sheriff’s deputies early Thursday on Portland Road and Ohio Route 4 where authorities reportedly found marijuana and prescription pills in his car.

National Drug and Alcohol Fact Week/Huron County stats

National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week just came to a close; with Huron County Public Health encouraging residents to become more educated on the facts surrounding substance abuse.

When surveyed last year, 11-percent of Huron County’s youth had used marijuana at least once in the past 30 days, and 5-percent had used medications that were not prescribed for them or took more than prescribed to get high at some time in their life.

Huron County Public Health says one resource available to parents is the Ohio Department of Health’s Start Talking program; located online at starttalking.ohio.gov.
