Huron County residents can soon pay taxes Electronically
Huron County Treasurer Kathleen Schaffer has announced that a contract has been signed to soon give those in Huron County the ability to pay their property and mobile home taxes online, or in person with their credit or debit card. Beginning September 6th, payments can be made by visiting the Huron County Auditor’s website: www.huroncountyauditor.org and clicking on the ‘payment’ link.
Detox Center to likely open in Sandusky next year
Commissioners in Erie County have given their approval to $500,000 in funding to construct a drug and alcohol detox center in Sandusky. The Sandusky Register says the 16-bed facility will be located at the Erie County Health Department site on Superior Street. The center will offer 24/7 treatment that allows addicts to begin their first step in recovery. Construction is likely to begin in October, with an opening date set for July of 2017, with a total cost at around $2 million.
Erie County Sheriff’s Office receive $37,000 in Traffic Safety Grant Funds
The Erie County Sheriff’s Office has received a grant of just over $37,000 in federal traffic safety funds. The grant money will be used to perform overtime high-visibility enforcement patrols in areas with a high number of serious traffic crashes; including US 250 and State Routes 2, 4, 60, and 61. Last month, a total of 83 traffic stops were made with funding from the ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ campaign.
Milan Melon Festival begins Saturday
The annual Milan Melon Festival runs Saturday through Monday. Event highlights include the Melon Festival Queen Contest at 5:00 pm Saturday and the Edison Band concert Saturday night at 7:00 pm, a 5-K run on Sunday morning at 9:00 am and a parade on Sunday at 2:00 pm; along with the festival being the home of cantaloupe ice cream and watermelon sherbet.
Highway Patrol says “Don’t drive impaired this Labor Day weekend”
The Ohio State Highway Patrol has issued a reminder to drivers to not get behind the wheel impaired during this Labor Day weekend. The Highway Patrol says that troopers will be out in full force this weekend on Ohio’s roadways, arresting those who are driving impaired. During Labor Day weekend last year, 14 people were killed on Ohio’s roadways, including seven involving an impaired driver. The patrol says to remember to designate a sober driver if you plan to drink alcohol.
Attorney seeking investigation into possible ‘fake’ support letters concerning NEXUS pipeline
An attorney representing several grassroots groups is asking the feds to investigate what appear to be, fake letters of support for construction of the NEXUS natural gas pipeline across northern Ohio. According to the Chronicle-Telegram, several people whose names appear on letters-of-support deny writing them.
