Monday Crash claims the life of Lorain man

A Lorain man was killed and another injured in an early-morning crash when he was trying to pass another car on State Route 58. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, 27 year-old Christopher Newman was driving south on Route 58 around 5:30 am Monday when he tried to pass a car driven by 24 year-old Lakieva Brisby, also of Lorain. Police say Newman’s car struck Brisby’s car, and both went off the road. Brisby was uninjured in the crash; but Newman was pronounced dead at the scene, and his passenger, 47 year-old Jeffrey Newman, also of Lorain, was taken by Life Flight helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland with serious injuries. Police say both drivers were wearing their seat belts. The crash remains under investigation.

 

Edison Statue to return “Home” today

Edison is headed home today (Tuesday 6/7), as the Thomas Edison statue is scheduled to arrive in Milan this afternoon for a parade and welcoming program.  Don Gfell, Vice President of the Edison Birthplace Museum, said the statue coming back to Milan will be a great moment. The Edison statue will be on its way from the Ohio State Capitol in Columbus, and will arrive in Milan around 11:45 am Tuesday via a police escort parade, where it will go to the town square and then pass by Edison’s birthplace before being taken to the library, for a welcoming  program at around 1:30 pm.  It will then be displayed in the library lobby until September, before it is moved to the National Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C.

 

Cedar Point re-opening Today

After being closed Monday due to power outages from downed lines on the Causeway, Cedar Point is slated to re-open today. On their Facebook page yesterday, the park said that Ohio Edison’s repairs the Causeway are ongoing; and because of Ohio Edison’s hard work, Cedar Point will re-open on Tuesday, June 7th, and that there’s no damage to the park itself.  Ticket refund and exchange information is also posted on their Facebook and Twitter pages.

 

Norwalk City Council will meet Tonight

The regular session of Norwalk City Council is slated for tonight (Tuesday 6/7) at 7:30 pm.  Topics for discussion and approval include levying an additional tax for recreational purposes, a NatureWorks grant to replace the shelter house at Baines Park and installing an ADA sidewalk there, and an agreement involving residents being able to file their city taxes online. The meeting will take place at the courtroom inside Norwalk Municipal Court.

 

Tips from PUCO on what to do in a Power Outage

With summer arriving and the recent power outages in Sandusky, now is a good time to go over power outage preparation information from the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO).  PUCO tips include immediately reporting the outage to your electric company and to unplug all major appliances and electronics to avoid a possible power surge.  They suggest to leave one light on so you’ll be able to tell when service is restored.  They also recommend having a storm kit that includes water, non-perishable food, batteries, flashlights, and a battery-powered radio.
