Hunters checked 17,512 white-tailed deer on Monday, the opening day of Ohio’s deer-gun season.

According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, that’s way down from last year, when opening day hunters checked 22,619 deer. Close to home, Ashland County had the highest number—353, followed by Richland County—337, then Huron County, 296.

Hunters harvested 1,238 wild turkeys, during Ohio’s fall wild turkey season, which began October 13th, and ended November 30th.

There’s been a third delay, in the trial of a Fremont man accused of killing three others.

The trial of Igmidio ‘Roger’ Mista was supposed to begin yesterday in Sandusky County Common Pleas Court, but it was postponed until February 17th, due to new evidence. Mista is accused of shooting and killing three men at the Last Call Bar in March. One of the victims was an off-duty police officer.

Roughly eight months after Norwalk won the Division II state basketball championship, a book has been written about the season, and the events leading up to it.

“Norwalk’s Championship: A historic state title—and the maligned city that embraced it” was written by Sandusky Register Sports Editor Mark Hazelwood. The book is 166 pages long, and thoroughly covers Norwalk’s 29-1 season, plus the previous three seasons, and much more.

The cost of the book is $20, and it goes on sale, starting December 11th.

A portion of the proceeds will be given to the “Weekends Without Hunger” program, which ensures Norwalk and St. Paul elementary students who qualify for free or reduced meals at school are fed on weekends throughout the school year.

A bizarre fight between a Sandusky man and his wife has led to criminal charges.

38-year-old George Hawkins, and 31-year-old Amanda Hawkins were arrested Monday night, on charges of felonious assault, domestic violence and child endangering. After an argument over Facebook, George Hawkins swung a hammer at his wife, while she allegedly brandished a knife.

According to reports, he tried to grab the knife, and suffered a deep cut that severed a tendon. The couple’s eight-year-old son was home during the skirmish. Sandusky police learned about the fight, after George went to the hospital.

Investigators may have to turn to DNA to confirm the identity of a man who died at a halfway house in Sandusky.

As we told you yesterday, detectives hoped to use medical records but were unsuccessful.  The man died in a Sunday afternoon fire at the Beacon House on Venice Road.  Foul play isn’t suspected.

The State Highway Patrol says 19 people died in crashes during the Thanksgiving holiday period, defined as last Wednesday through Sunday.

That number is comparable to previous years.
