Erie County/Woman and son dead in apparent murder-suicide
An Erie County mother and her teenage son have died from what’s initially being looked at as a murder-suicide by the son.
Authorities say 44-year-old Heather Schmidt and her 16-year-old son were discovered by a younger son in their Snowy Egret Drive home in Huron Township late Tuesday night.
Schmidt and the 16-year-old boy had gunshot wounds to the head.
Schmidt was found dead…the son was taken to the hospital where he passed away Wednesday afternoon.
Bellevue-Medina County/Bellevue man ID’d as burning car victim
A Bellevue man has been identified by authorities as the person found dead last month in a burning car, in Medina County’s Chatham Township…
Daniel Mack of Sandhill Road was 48.
The coroner has not ruled on the cause-of-death, but the Medina County Sheriff’s Office believes, there was no foul play.
Erie-Huron County/Rite Aid raids
Two local Rite Aid stores were among multiple locations to be recently raided by the Drug Enforcement Administration.
The Norwalk Reflector reports that both the Norwalk and Perkins Township stores had search executed on Tuesday.
A DEA representative said they’re investigating “potential irregularities in dispensing practices”.
It’s unknown if the raids are related to multiple ongoing lawsuits involving opioid prescriptions that have been filed by northern Ohio counties and cities.
Lorain County/Gibson’s Bakery-Oberlin College case continues
A jury in Lorain County Common Pleas Court is expected today, to begin deliberations in the case of Gibson’s Bakery versus Oberlin College.
Gibson’s sued the college, claiming damage and loss of business from student-protests in 2016.
Students accused the bakery of racial profiling after a reported shoplifting incident, but three students later pled ‘guilty’ to misdemeanors and wrote letters, rejecting racial discrimination.
Authorities from Oberlin College have denied aiding and abetting the students.
State News/$11 million grant to help workforce/opioid epidemic
Governor Mike DeWine says the state will invest $11 million over the next two years to help employers and unemployed workers across the state overcome issues related to the opioid epidemic.
The resources will support employers who hire individuals in recovery and provide job training and other services to help unemployed workers recover from substance use disorder and find jobs.

The Ohio Department of Health is partnering with Count the Kicks, a proven stillbirth prevention public awareness campaign.
Count the Kicks teaches a method for, and importance of, tracking fetal movement during the third trimester of pregnancy
The free resources include educational materials and a Count the Kicks phone app available in the Google Play and iTunes online stores.
Huron County/Willard “Tree City” honors
The City of Willard has been named a “Tree City USA” for the 39th straight year.
Willard joins just 3 other Ohio cities to receive the recognition.
Over 3,400 cities nationwide are part of the Arbor Day Foundation’s tree expansion program.
