State News/Buckle up and Drive Sober for Memorial Day

During the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, the Ohio State Highway Patrol says they’ll be highly visible on the roadways to promote safety.

As part of the ‘Click it or Ticket’ campaign troopers are encouraging drivers to wear their safety belts.

Last year in Ohio, 17 fatal crashes killed 18 people during the Memorial Day weekend.

Of those fatalities, seven were OVI-related and seven were unbelted.

 

Bellevue-Sandusky County/Murder suspect’s trial delayed

A Bellevue man’s murder trial has been delayed until July.

59-year-old John Frost has been charged with murder and involuntary manslaughter in the death of Curtis Gibbs in July of last year…in which both men had guns that fired.

The Norwalk Reflector reports that Frost’s family claims it was in self-defense.

The trial delay is due to Sandusky County Prosecutor Tim Braun no longer prosecuting the case, which was supposed to begin this week.

 

State News/Health Departments to receive help with Hep-A outbreak

The Ohio Department of Health is committing another 650-thousand-dollars to help local health departments, battle a statewide outbreak of Hepatitis-A.

Funding will be allocated based on the needs of each department.

People with Hepatitis-A can result in a mild illness lasting a few weeks to severe illness lasting several months.

 

Lorain County/Health survey results

Every 4 years, Lorain County Public Health conducts a survey on health and wellness, and yesterday, they revealed the results of the latest survey.

The number show;

  • 70-percent of adults are overweight, compared to 69-percent 4 years ago
  • 12-percent of adults are smokers, down from 22-percent
  • 17-percent of adults report obstacles that interfere with getting mental health services, compared to 15-percent 4 years ago.

Lorain County Health partners and other groups can use the information to plan programs, start initiatives and apply for grants.

 

Erie County/Water tower brought down

A water tower came toppling to the ground in Erie County on Thursday.

No need to worry though; as according to the Sandusky Register, the no-longer functioning tower on Maple Avenue in Margaretta Township was scheduled to be demolished; and is being replaced by a new pump station.

State News/Turnpike chargers

Today, the Ohio Turnpike Commission will take the wraps off new charging stations for electric vehicles.

Power will be available at 4 services plazas, from the Indiana border to Ottawa County.

 

Huron County/Sheriff’s Office hiring Dispatcher

Now hiring…the Huron County Sheriff’s Office.

They’re looking for a full-time dispatcher.

You can pick up an application at their Civil Division office or download one at www.HuronCountySherriff.org.

 

Huron County/Storm training

The North Coast Community Emergency Response Team is hosting weather and storm spotter training next week in Huron County.

The SKYWARN session will take place Wednesday at 7:00 pm at the Huron County EMA office in Norwalk on Shady Lane Drive.

 

Erie-Huron-Ottawa County/Festivals ‘o plenty

Festival season heats up this weekend…

The Strawberry Fest in Norwalk and Walleye Festival in Port Clinton both get going this evening around 5:00 pm.

‘Ohio Bike Week’ officially kicks it into high gear in Sandusky and the Toledo-area today.
