Norwalk/Teenager reportedly shoots himself in suicide attempt

A young boy from the Norwalk area reportedly shot himself in an apparent suicide attempt on Sunday.

The Sandusky Register reports that the incident took place on Woodlawn Avenue in Norwalk after a 13 or 14 year-old boy had took someone’s car and was driving erratically.

He reportedly shot himself in an unknown part of his body before police could intervene.

The boy was taken to a Cleveland hospital and was reportedly still alive after the incident.

 

Norwalk/Milan man seriously hurt in reported stabbing

Authorities are investigating an incident Friday that sent a 22-year-old Milan man to Cleveland’s MetroHealth Medical Center with a serious eye injury.

20-year-old Zachary Boster of Greenwich was arrested and charged with felonious assault in connection with the alleged stabbing of Charles Houghtland at a home on Fifth Street in Norwalk.

 

Huron County/Jail and Sheriff’s Office upgrades

Upgrades are on the way to the Huron County Jail and Sheriff’s Office.

County commissioners have approved the replacement of a heating/air conditioning handler and improvements of two others at the sheriff’s office, costing around $383,000.

Commissioners have also given their OK to replace all showers in the jail at a price of nearly $95,000.

 

Sandusky/Second woman arrested in abduction

A second person has been arrested in connection with the abduction and Amber Alert for a 4-year-old Sandusky boy, who was found unharmed and returned to Erie County.

Tamara Montalvo of Florida faces a complicity-related kidnapping charge.

Sandusky resident Jennifer Hemchak has already been charged with kidnapping.

4-year-old D’Quai Hemchak, who was reportedly abducted around 5:00 pm Friday, was found safe by authorities with Hemchak and/or Montalvo near Cincinnati at around 8:30 pm.

 

Local counties/State unemployment numbers

The latest state unemployment figures from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services show area counties at a higher jobless rate than the state average.

The state unemployment rate was 4.7 percent in January.

Compared to that, Huron County had a jobless rate of 8.6 percent in Ohio; while Erie County was at 7.4 percent and Sandusky County at 5.5 percent.

Lorain County checked in at 6.2 percent.

Huron County ranked as the seventh highest rate in the state.

 

Bellevue/School board opening

The Bellevue City School board has a vacancy they’re looking to fill.

Dr. Ted Clark, whose term expires at the end of 2019, has resigned.

Those interested can apply to the Bellevue Board of Education Office by March 29th.

 

Sandusky/Kalahari accident area back open

The area of Kalahari’s water park where five people were injured Monday due to a falling air duct, has re-opened to visitors.

The accident took place in the wave action pool and children’s basketball pool, which re-opened on Friday.

Huron Township building official John Zimmerman told the Sandusky Register that Kalahari staff are working to replace the metal cables holding up the air ducts and are also re-designing the air duct system.

 

Huron County/Parks and trails to receive improvements

The state’s new capital improvements bill includes funding to improve three Huron County parks and trails.

$150,000 goes to the Willard Reservoir, $100,000 to a trail in Norwalk and $33,000 for a trail project in Monroeville.

The Willard reservoir funding includes road paving and boat ramp improvements.

Part of the money for Norwalk will be used to improve the trail around the city’s reservoir.

Monroeville’s funding will be used at the connector trail to the city’s Clark Park to the North Coast Inland Trail for bathrooms and parking.
