Flags are being flown at half-staff, in honor of former Ohio Governor John Gilligan.

Gilligan died yesterday, at age 92. He served as governor from 1971-1975. The Democrat was responsible for the creation of the state income tax. In a prepared statement, Governor John Kasich said Gilligan served with honor and distinction.

 

On tonight’s Norwalk City Council agenda: Discussion of possible changes, to the city’s charter.

Council members are mulling whether or not to send two proposed changes to voters. One would extend council terms from two to four years. The other would allow city officials to look outside for a new police and fire chief, if necessary.

 

It appears a stove sparked a blaze that destroyed a mobile home in Wakeman.

Three cats died in the weekend fire at the Wenz Road home.

 

The 2014 Cedar Point season will bring with it two new family friendly rides, changes to Camp Snoopy and more renovations to Hotel Breakers.

Park officials announced this morning that Pipe Scream and Lake Erie Eagles will go up along the Gemini Midway.  Pipe Scream is billed as ‘combining the best of a roller coaster and a flat ride in one.’  Lake Erie Eagles is described as a classic thrill ride.  Some of Camp Snoopy will be reshuffled and a planned two-year renovation project will begin at Hotel Breakers.

 

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine has announced a new effort to fight synthetic marijuana.

DeWine said he’ll propose legislation that would speed up the process of banning new chemicals being used to make the drug. Some of the chemicals are currently available at such places as gas stations and convenience stores.

 

A state lawmaker says he plans to reintroduce legislation that would require adults seeking welfare to first pass a drug test.

Republican Tim Schaffer of Lancaster said he’ll release more details tomorrow.  The proposal is expected to be similar to ones he’s pushed in previous years.  Applicants would pay for the test and those who fail would be denied benefits and referred for treatment.

 

A state prison worker is due in court accused of trading food for sex with inmates.

Richland County prosecutors say Robert Picklesimer allowed two inmates to take food from the Mansfield Correctional Institution’s kitchen to eat in their cells in exchange for sexual acts.

 

Ohio’s new law banning texting while driving has led to very few citations.

In fact, a state spokesman said there’s no data, because the number is so small.

 

The state’s new quarter-percent sales tax increase goes into effect this Sunday.
